IN THE HEART OF BERGAMO: Donizetti Theater and its history

Donizetti Theater, everyone in Bergamo knows it... but almost no one really knows its history

The name “Teatro Donizetti” comes from the famous composer Gaetano Donizetti. This theater has a long history of opera performances, live concerts and theatrical shows. Its location in front of Sentierone, the most famous avenue in the city of Bergamo, enhances its prestige and centrality even further.

Originally, on the same place, was built Theater Riccardi in 1791. This theater was destroyed by a “mysterious fire” in 1797. Despite this tragic news, it was decided to rebuild the theater, making it even more impressive than before.

Gaetano Donizetti, a leading figure in the theatrical world, give a new name to this Theater on the occasion of Donizetti’s 100th birthday in 1897. Donizetti theater has been the stage of numerous world premieres of operas by Italian composers, thus ranking among the most important theaters throughout Italy and remaining over the years one of the most significant symbols of Bergamo!

Over the years, this theater has undergone several renovations aimed at improving its functionality while preserving the classic atmosphere that makes it so special.

To date, the genres of performances are various; here below some examples from December 2024:

  • Favole da incubo: Criminologist Roberta Bruzzone narrates some cases of feminicide, helping us to eliminate the distinction and gender stereotypes that we still notice in everyday life;
  • Swan Lake: A wonderful ballet that can tell an entire story through dance and the grace of its protagonists;

After 2023Bergamo, along with the city of Brescia, has been named the Italian Capital of Culture in order to celebrate the beauty of the cities, promoting themes such as culture, nature, hidden treasures and the “inventing city.”

The city’s attractions range from food and winemonuments, churches and museums to including the natural territories of the town, thus enhancing the cultural heritage of the area.

Bergamo and Brescia also served as a significant symbol in promoting resilience and courage in the post-Covid period.

For Gemels S.p.A., the story of Gaetano Donizetti and the related Theater encompasses not only culture, but also a Bergamo pride to be remembered and promoted among the beauty of the area.
