Perhaps not everyone knows the history of the Maserati car manufacturer, a troubled story of brothers with a big passion…
Italy 1887, Voghera, Lombardia (between Milan and Genoa) Alfieri Maserati was born, the 4th of 6 brothers, the oldest are Carlo and Bindo, six inseparable brothers and all with a passion, or better an obsession, for mechanics.
One day, the oldest of the brothers, Carlo, brought home a crude, old bicycle, and while his younger brothers observed their older brother with admiration, waiting and fighting to take a ride on it, Carlo modified it with a motor to make it go faster than a horse…
The six brothers’ true passion for speed and mechanics and Carlo’s adventure did not end there. He was hired by Fiat from Isotta Fraschini, but Carlo missed his five little brothers, those little rascals who did the perfect scam modifying motors and bicycles, getting grease between cogs and motors with the aim of going faster than everyone else. Unfortunately, in 1910, tuberculosis took Carlo away at only 29 years of age. The family is heartbroken and the brothers meet again in Voghera; on that very day in the memory of their brother whom they had admired so much since childhood, they make a promise to stay together and never again separate, continuing the passion that Carlo had passed on to them….
After Carlo’s death, his brother Alfieri founded the “Officine Alfieri Maserati” in Bologna. Over the years to come, the company’s events saw a continuous succession of ups and downs, nevertheless management troubles, racing successes and accidents, have not stopped Maserati from becoming an icon of engineering excellence and elegance still today coveted and appreciated all over the world.
